Four candles are lit at the Grotto at Notre Dame with the text Cultivators of Hope

On this day 183 years ago, Rev. Edward Sorin, C.S.C., arrived on 524 snow-covered acres in the fields of Northern Indiana with an audacious dream—to establish a great Catholic university, one destined to become “the most powerful means for good.”

That same spirit of hope continues to animate Notre Dame today. It inspires us to take on the most daunting challenges facing our world, to find solace and strength in one another, and to act with conviction in all that we do as we strive to cultivate hope.
