Men’s Basketball at Notre Dame won its first game in 1898 and now, 119 years later, ranks ninth all-time in wins among college basketball programs.

The names Carr, Dantley, Digger, Hawkins, Rivers, Murphy, and Harangody hang in the rafters as a testament to excellence across generations. The Irish boast 36 NCAA Tournament appearances, 17 trips to the Sweet Sixteen, seven Elite Eight showings, and one Final Four. Those teams were often led by one of the program’s 44 All-Americans or three NCAA Players of the Year. Pre-dating the NCAA Tournament, twice Notre Dame was named the Helms Foundation National Champions, and over the last six years the Irish are an impressive 97-14 in Purcell Pavilion.

The team is currently coached by Mike Brey. Brey was named Coach of the Year in 2011 by the AP, Sports Illustrated, and CBS. In addition, Brey was named the 2012 Jim Phelan Coach of the Year and the 2008 Skip Prosser Man of the Year. He was also voted Big East Coach of the Year in 2007, 2008, and 2011. During the 2013-14 season, Brey became the 17th active Division I coach to reach 300 wins at his current institution.

Among their many recent accomplishments, the Irish won the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) tournament in 2015 and were the only team in the nation to make the Elite Eight in both the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons. Over the past three years, the Irish have established program-best marks for NCAA wins and overall wins.

During the 2016-17 season, Notre Dame combined to shoot 489-611 (.800) from the free throw line, which led the NCAA and set the ACC single-season record. In addition, for the 13th time in 17 seasons and 10th time in the past 11 seasons, Notre Dame reached the 20-win mark for the year.

The ‘16-’17 class compiled 97 wins over four years, matching the all-time school record.
