From humble beginnings, Notre Dame Women's Basketball has developed into one of the most accomplished and celebrated programs in all of college sports.
A perennial contender for the national title, the Irish have made 24 NCAA Tournament appearances, 15 trips to the Sweet Sixteen, eight Elite Eight showings, and seven Final Four appearances. Notre Dame’s 22 consecutive NCAA championship appearances form the fourth-longest active streak in the nation and the fifth-longest of all-time. In 2001, with all-stars Ruth Riley and Niele Ivey, the Irish won the national championship, cementing the powerhouse status of the program.
Compiling a career record of 853-227 (.771), current Karen and Kevin Keyes Family Head Women's Basketball Coach Muffet McGraw is the sixth-winningest female coach in women's basketball history and 10th overall. Her 765 wins at Notre Dame alone make her one of just four female coaches to win 750 games at the same school. She is the winningest single-sport coach in Notre Dame's long and proud athletic history, and was named a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame's Class of 2017.
Notre Dame continues to build on its past success, as the 2016-17 team went 33-4 during the season, inlcuding 15-1 in conference play. In each of the past five years, Notre Dame has won both its conference regular season crown outright and its conference tournament title, the only team in the nation to do so. The 2016-17 season marked the 11th year in a row and the 23rd time in the past 24 years in which Notre Dame had won at least 20 games. It also produced the 12th Irish team to win at least 25 games in a season.
The past season was also the seventh time and the sixth year in a row that Notre Dame had claimed a No. 1-seed. The Irish made it all the way to the Elite Eight, the sixth time in seven years.
