As we celebrate over 50 years of coeducation at Notre Dame, it's important to recognize the great impact that women have had on this institution. From academics to athletics, women have made their mark on Notre Dame and continue to do so today.

One woman making a difference is Jamee Decio ’75, ’80L—one of the first undergraduate women to attend Notre Dame—who inspired the design of the 1972 hat which commemorates this milestone anniversary. Last year, she generously donated a hat to every female student on campus, and this year, she has done it again for first-year students.

On October 13, Jamee and the Annual Giving team hand-delivered 1,051 hats to Notre Dame residence halls, ensuring every female first-year student received one.

“These hats represent the legacy of the women who've come before and those who have yet to come.” – Jamee Decio

Jamee's dedication to celebrating women at Notre Dame reminds us of the progress made since the University opened its doors to women in 1972. Today, women comprise approximately half of the undergraduate student body and are integral to the Notre Dame community.

As we look back on the last 51 years, let's celebrate the women who have paved the way for future generations. Their contributions have made Notre Dame a better place, and we are grateful for their hard work and dedication. Let's also look forward to the future and continue to support and empower female Notre Dame students in all areas of life.

“I feel so much pride not only when I wear my 1972 hat, but especially when I see my fellow female classmates proudly wearing theirs. I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to receive a Notre Dame education, and none of this would be possible without the many women who paved the way before me. These hats are a wonderful way to commemorate that blessing.” – Lena Dougherty, Director of Gender Relations: Title IX & Women's Initiatives in Notre Dame Student Government
