Since the inception of the varsity softball program in 1989, Notre Dame Softball has resided in three different conferences in Division I: the Midwestern Collegiate Conference (now the Horizon League), the BIG EAST Conference, and the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Over the first 30 seasons of the program’s existence, the Irish have won 19 regular-season conference championships, 11 conference tournament titles, and have added a combined 12 runner-up finishes in both regular season and tournament final standings.
Under current head coach Deanna Gumpf's guidance, the Irish have made 19 consecutive trips to the NCAA regionals for a total of 22 appearances, claiming four conference tournament titles during that span. Gumpf has compiled a career record of 702-294-1 (.705) in her 17 seasons at Notre Dame, placing her among the elite skippers in the NCAA. Gumpf joined Hall of Fame women's basketball mentor Muffet McGraw as the only coaches in Notre Dame's fabled history to win 700 or more games at the helm of an Irish program.
Notre Dame Softball's ability to compete is fueled in part by the Rockne Athletics Fund. As peers continue to invest heavily in their facilities, recruiting budgets, and training operations, the cost of excellence rises. Gifts to the Rockne Athletics Fund underwrite scholarships and fund team priorities. The top priorities for Notre Dame Softball are to improve its travel budget due to logistical strains of ACC competition, player space and videoboard updates to Melissa Cook Stadium, and secure resources for foreign travel team trip.
These projects will greatly impact the welfare and experience of our softball student-athletes now and for years to come.
Join the Rockne Athletics Fund
The Rockne Athletics Fund was created in 2002 to galvanize alumni, parents, and friends of Notre Dame to fund expendable grants-in-aid for student-athletes. Members help ensure that the University continues to offer its student-athletes, regardless of their financial resources, a transforming educational experience, one that combines intellectual rigor, athletic excellence, and an emphasis on spirituality and moral values.
