The Notre Dame Volleyball team was granted varsity status in 1980, and since that time, Irish squads have built a strong legacy of excellence on the court.

The program has produced 14 All-Americans, as well as three academic All-Americans, demonstrating the University's commitment to both the physical and intellectual development of its student-athletes.

The University of Notre Dame became a staple of the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship under the watch of former head coach Debbie Brown, after making just one visit to the tournament before her arrival. The Irish earned 15 consecutive bids to the NCAAs from 1992-2006 to become just one of eight schools that appeared in each of the 15 NCAA tournaments over that stretch. The Irish have an all-time record of 14-18 in NCAA championship play, highlighted by six trips to the round of 16 and a visit to the 1993 quarterfinals.

In 27 years of conference participation in the North Star, Midwestern Collegiate Conference, and BIG EAST, Notre Dame won 17 regular-season crowns and 15 league tournaments, while compiling a 220-33 (.870) mark in regular-season conference matches. Irish volleyball squads carried a home conference winning streak of 74 straight matches from 1991 to 2004, which included wins over both MCC and BIG EAST opponents.

Under current head coach Jim McLaughlin, who is the only person to coach both a women's and a men's volleyball team to NCAA titles, the Irish finished 2016 with a record of 22-10, the most wins produced by an Irish squad since the 2002 season. Notre Dame went 13-7 in conference play, marking the most Atlantic Coast Conference victories in program history. Of the 22 victories, 16 came in straight-set fashion.
