Since its inception as a varsity program in 1981, Women’s Swimming and Diving at Notre Dame has earned 25 conference titles, made 23 NCAA Tournament appearances, had dozens of student-athletes earn All-America Honors, and has produced one national champion and American record-holder.
The program’s 25 conference championships include fourteen consecutive BIG EAST titles from 1997-2010. Since 1998, the Fighting Irish have earned five conference Most Outstanding Swimmer awards, five Most Outstanding Diver awards, and three different coaches have been recognized as BIG EAST Coach of the Year.
Women’s Swimming and Diving at Notre Dame has been led by six coaches, each leaving a distinct mark on the program. The team was led by Dennis Stark from 1981-85. Under Stark’s leadership, the Irish finished with a .689 winning percentage and earned first place in the North Star Conference twice.
Tim Welsh assumed the team’s reigns from 1985-96, during which time Notre Dame finished first in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference twice, before earning six consecutive first-place finishes in the BIG EAST Conference. Bailey Weathers took over from 1996-2005, finishing with an impressive .808 winning percentage. Under Weathers, the Irish earned nine consecutive first-place finishes within the BIG EAST and made numerous appearances at the NCAA Tournament.
From 2005-08, Carrie Nixon coached the Fighting Irish to three first-place finishes in the BIG EAST and two appearances at the NCAA Tournament. Following Nixon, Notre Dame was coached by Brian Barnes from 2008-14. Barnes made six NCAA appearances, led the program into the Atlantic Coast Conference, and coached the progam’s first national champion in Emma Reaney. Now a combined program with the men, the women are led by Mike Litzinger.
Join the Rockne Heritage Fund
The Rockne Heritage Fund was created in 2002 to galvanize alumni, parents, and friends of Notre Dame to fund expendable grants-in-aid for student-athletes. Members help ensure that the University continues to offer its student-athletes, regardless of their financial resources, a transforming educational experience, one that combines intellectual rigor, athletic excellence, and an emphasis on spirituality and moral values.
